Dear Women in Mining

I have decided to act and have bought a domain name which will be developed into a website in the coming months. The blog will continue and until then also move to the new address, www.womeninmining.net.

At a later stage both will coexist with different purposes and have different features. The blog helped get going until now but a free platform is no longer enough as it is a bit restricting. The new setup allows for more freedom and fexibility and I hope you will continue to find it informative and send me interesting things to post. The objective of the website is an interactive site with useful features, everything the blog can't offer. So as always bear with me.

Just a quick note to say I have been looking at some books on blogs even ordered some but none of them are really relevant for what we want: a good look, structure, interactive features etc. I have sent some back to get a refund as they weren't going to be super helpful.
I am now hoping to get some time before my holidays (mid-Oct to early Nov) to find out how I can get the html programming skills to turn this into a good project and if it is actually possible to do it in a blog instead of a website.

The theme for this month’s lunch is FINDING AND KEEPING YOUR JOB IN THE INDUSTRY. We hope to have input from people in the recruiting field, plus women who have been successful in landing great jobs.

Nominations for Awards

I have a mission for you: An opportunity for our first ever global action exercise.
At the Mines & Money conference which will be held in November 2006 in London several awards will be granted and nominations are now open.
Feel free to use this system to nominate women and men in the different categories. You have until Friday 6th of Oct for nominations. Then for a month we will be able to vote online for our preferred nominees.
Which means we have a say and can nominate women for these awards and once votes are open we can all vote in massive numbers for women (and/or men) to be selected.
Women have been nominated in previous years but none has ever won the prize! Why don't we use the democratic system in place to try and change this. We can make a difference!

WIM drinks London & other news

Hi everyone

Reminder: our monthly drinks in London happen every 2nd Wednesday of the month (next one next week!)

Time: as from 6.30pm

My idea is to insert a calendar into the blog where all events in every town will be recorded so that each woman travelling across the globe will be able to view who meets where when by quickly glancing at the calendar, enabling her to participate in events away from home. This might allow for new relationships or friendships to be made. I know lots of you travel constantly or a lot, more than me anyway:-) As I haven't found any help anywhere I have ordered books on the internet to learn to deal with the html formatting of the blog and the set up of all the new extra features I have in mind. So bear with me a while longer...

I'd also like to know more about each WIM group worldwide so that I can put contacts of co-ordinators and a small blurb on each group so that again people visiting can contact you in case they are lonely in town and there are no meetigs that precise week. They might also contact you for plenty more reasons. There might be synergies or lessons to be learnt from each other's experiences.

I think this would bring people nearer. If you know of groups and Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, continental Europe, Latin America do let me know as I only have knowledge of Australia, USA, Canada and Peru.

The Minex (Mining and Exploration) Forum is aimed at encouraging international dialogue and raising awareness of the issues affecting mining and exploration business of national and international companies in Russia, Central Asia and other CIS countries. 2 Scholarships in Canada for Women in Engineering

STUDENTS CAN APPLY NOW FOR NEW AMEC SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WOMEN IN ENGINEERING
(August 2006) – Canadian women from across Canada are being invited to apply NOW for two new annual scholarships from AMEC.

AMEC has partnered with the Canadian Engineering Memorial Foundation (CEMF) to provide the two scholarships for women in engineering beginning this fall.

AMEC is funding the new $10,000 AMEC Masters Scholarship in Engineering and the new $5,000 undergraduate AMEC Scholarship in Engineering for Aboriginal Women. As well, AMEC is ensuring the graduate women will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience by offering the Masters scholarship recipients summer employment.
Criteria and guidelines are now posted at www.cemf.ca or by calling 1-866-883-2363 for those wanting to apply for the scholarships.

Deadline for applications is October 20, 2006. All applications must be postmarked no later than October 20 to be accepted.

“The AMEC scholarships create opportunities from women in engineering. It’s about investing in their future and helping them fulfill their aspirations to become leaders in their field,” says Michael Jolliffe, Vice President, Government Relations and Communications, AMEC. “We want to attract high caliber women engineering students to apply and use this financial support and summer job opportunity to pursue a career in engineering. Everything is set up and ready to go – we are now ready to move to the next stage of the scholarship process, which is reviewing applications.”

These new scholarships will be awarded based on leadership, extracurricular activities and the applicant's dedication to encouraging more women to enter engineering, rather than academic performance.

“We encourage all universities, WISE clubs and provincial associations and others who are in contact with female engineering students to promote these scholarships to the young women,” says Suzelle Barrington, CEMF President. “Our scholarship winners are recognized as leaders across Canada and are provided with great networking opportunities, job experience and financial support.”

CEMF now offers a total of 10 scholarships at the graduate and undergraduate levels for women in engineering. Criteria and guidelines and specific deadlines to apply for each are all now posted on the website at www.cemf.ca.

CEMF was founded in 1990 to develop scholarship and award programs encouraging women to choose a career in engineering and to honour of the memory of the 14 women at École Polytechnique whose contributions to Canada ended on December 6, 1989.

4th Annual Conference for Women in Mining

Transmitting the announcement of a WIM conference:

We are pleased to inform you that the 4th International Conference of Mining Women will take place from September 27 to 29, 2006, in the City of Ica (Peru), under the name "MINING AND HUMAN RIGHTS".

The main purpose of this event is to promote the analysis of social and economical policies that may contribute to the sustainability of mining activity in harmony with its environment, underlining the role of women in mining.

Like in the previous International Conference of Mining Women, which took place in the City of Trujillo in August 2004, the Fourth Conference is being organized by the WAAIME - PERU, a non-profit organization formed by women who are related with mining activities, which supports university students of different disciplines related to the Earth Sciences, through the granting of scholarships. The Conference is sponsored by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, the Society of Mining, Petroleum and Energy and the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru.

Furthermore, we would like to underscore that it is of utmost interest to us to achieve an active participation of representative actors of the mining activity and if you should require any further information, kindly contact Ms. Cecilia Moya of the Organizing Committee, who will be pleased to answer any enquiries in this respect.

WIM Award

We are working slowly towards setting up an international Women in Mining Award to coincide with Mines & Money in London. The conference happens each year in November. The award would probably not be part of the main conference but could be held separately during the event. They are assessing the opportunities and challenges for women in the fly in fly out landscape of modern mining times. Certainly very interesting topic and very actual.

1. Women AusIMM Members Tell Us About their Working Lifestyles

The University of Queensland Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM) has conducted a survey on behalf of Macquarie Securities and The AusIMM to ask our members about their individual experiences of working in the minerals industry, and about their views on factors which could impact them and the profitability and futuregrowth of the industry. Of the 1249 members who responded, 119 or 8.8% were female. The survey, which can be viewed at http://www.ausimm.com.au/2005survey_minerals_industry_professionals.pdf included several questions on attraction and retention in the minerals sector, looking at things such as remuneration, work/life balance, mentoring etc. The survey also asked respondents to make suggestions about what companies could do to better retain people. A total of 858 members and 91 women provide qualitative answers to this question. The next step at The AusIMM will be to analyse what you wrote together with the quantitative data, to provide an overview of what members want from their professional lives, in different disciplines, at different stages of their lives and along gender lines. The report will be published in The AusIMM Bulletin. Of the 119 women surveyed there were: 41 geologists, 20 metallurgists, 11 managers, 6 environment professionals and 13 other. Over 70% were partnered but only 32% had dependent children.

Women in Mining has as objective to become a global dynamic forum for women in the mining industry. Several loose affiliations or registered organisations already exist in several towns but there is none encompassing everyone regardless of location. The internet seemed the best medium to achieve this.

I hope to appeal to all those who are working in the sector, have worked in the sector, are studying or teaching relevant degrees, have married into the sector or are simply interested in it.

Mining has until now been a male-dominated industry but things are changing. There are more women out there than ever before. However, most of them are still professionals around the industry rather than mining engineers, geologists, environmental engineers etc. Even if we are far more we probably aren't always aware of it and/or feel isolated. It is not always easy to work in a quite sexist and chauvinistic industry.

It is not just frustrating but also a fascinating and a truly global sector of the economy and we'd like to discuss all things - good and bad - with the objective to try and improve things going forward, become a voice.
